Syunkunitai, which retains its pristine appearance.

A wetland with an area of about 600 ha formed by a sandbar separating neighbouring Lake Furen and Nemuro Bay, the name is derived from the Ainu word ‘sunku-nitai’ (Ezo spruce forest). The area has been largely untouched by humans since prehistoric times and retains a high degree of pristine nature. The area is home to a large number of wild animals, including a herd of Ezo sika deer, which is found nowhere else. The site has a complex topography with a mix of coast, sand dunes, grassland, forest and marshland from the sea, hundreds of species of migratory birds, and a unique landscape created by dead Ezo straw and red Ezo spruce.
