PULSE OF LIFE IN KITASHIRIBESHI（パルス・オブ・ライフ・イン・キタシリべシ）

Hokkaido is divided into 14 branches. Among the Shiribeshi branch to which Otaru City belongs, six municipalities near the Sea of Japan coast are called “KitaShiribeshi”. KitaShiribeshi is a place where the city and nature work together like a single living organism, and the pulse of the area beats repeatedly. Seasons, things, and people go round and round.

14の支庁に分けられる北海道。小樽市が属する後志支庁のうち、日本海沿岸付近の6市町村は「北しりべし」と呼ばれる。街と自然がまるで一つの生き物のように連動し、鼓動を繰り返す北しりべし。巡り巡る、季節、物、人。

OUR STORIES : from OTARU　”青の街”

Distant echoes of the tide. Blue waves lap the shore and the cloudy sky stretches out beyond the horizon. The blue color of the landscape, like jewel, is a mirror that absorbs the seasons. The people of the port town, living in the seasons as they turn. Those tranquil moments day to day the passing of generations linked together by the town of Otaru. The silhouettes that emerge from the crowd are the truth of this city and its allure. Everything is connected to the ocean.

遠く聴く、潮鳴りの響き。打ち寄せる青い波と、水平向こうに広がる雲居の空。風景を、宝石の如く彩る青色は、季節を吸い込む写し鏡。日々を生きる港町の人々と、過ぎる時代を繋げる、小樽の街。群像から浮かび上がる輪郭は、この街の真実の姿とその魅力。
すべては海でつながっている。

LAND OF OBSIDIAN（遠軽町白滝ジオパーク）

Engaru, Hokkaido. World-famous for it’s obsidian ore deposits. Its obsidian output supported the growth of human history by producing extremely sharp stone bladed tools by splitting the ore. Here, many have been preserved as historical relics of the stone age. Furthermore, it is covered in unique topographical landscapes born from volcanic activity from 2.2 million years ago. This is recognized and protected as a Japan Geopark praised for bringing human history into prosperity with nature and natural resources from the earth.

世界有数の黒曜石鉱床が位置する街、北海道遠軽町。この場所から産出されていた黒曜石は、割るだけで鋭利な刃物となる画期的な道具、「石器」として人類の歴史を支え続けてきました。町内にはこれらが旧石器時代の歴史遺物として多く遺され、更に220万年前の火山活動が生み出した特徴的な地形景観が広がっています。これらは大地が作り出した自然と自然資源と共に繁栄してきた人類史を讃え、日本ジオパークとして認定、保護されています。

PLAYGROUND : Moerenuma Park, SAPPORO, JAPAN

“I revive ground that has been hurt by humans by turning it into art. That is my job.” Moerenuma Park in the outskirts of Sapporo city, Hokkaido in Japan. It is a park that was created as “Its entirety is one sculpture”. the final work left behind by sculptor Isamu Noguchi in his lifetime, it is also a land art. Jn the park is a mountain called Play Mountain, a beach, various toys etc have been arranged geometrically, visitors can enjoy the unique landscape where nature and art are combined. Also, under this park 2.7 million tons of garbage is buried. This place which was made into a garbage landfill site, is a symbol of Isamu Noguchi’s thoughts on returning to nature, and the rehabilitation of the environment.

“人間が傷つけた土地をアートで再生する。それは僕の仕事です。” 北海道札幌市郊外のモエレ沼公園。彫刻家イサム・ノグチが生涯に残した最後の作品であり、ランドアートでもあります。公園内にはプレイマウンテンと呼ばれる山やビーチ、様々な遊具などが幾何学的に配置されており、自然とアートが融合した独特の景観を楽しむことができます。また、この公園の下には270万トンのゴミが埋まっています。ゴミの埋立地となったこの場所には、自然への回帰と環境再生へのイサム・ノグチの思いが込められています。

THE SNOWFIELD: A JOURNEY INTO THE WILD

Located at the northern tip of Japan, Soya region in Hokkaido is close to Siberia having a border to Russia. Soya is known as a sightseeing spot that has a natural vast landscape straddling over islands whereas most of the area is uncultivated to remain natural. On the other hand, the wilderness is covered with snow in winter and changing its form would make you think as if standing in the Antarctic circle. I searched a restricted area where I can only visit in this season, which is about 2,5000 hectares of the hinterland of the National Nature Park. I’ve created a video work that shows flora and fauna surviving in a severe environment, natural sceneries that have been continuing from the ancient times and the traces of people who live vigorously in this area.

日本最北の国立公園である、利尻礼文サロベツ国立公園。ここは北海道の宗谷地方一帯、島嶼部にも跨る雄大な自然風景が望める観光地である一方、手付かずの自然が多く残っています。一方、冬季は原野一面が雪に覆われ、さながら南極圏に降り立ったかのような場所に。今回は約6,700ヘクタールにも及ぶサロベツ原野の奥地、この時期しか立ち入れない場所を旅し、厳しい環境に息づく動植物、古代から続く自然風景、力強く生きる人々の痕跡を映像作品に残しました。

ODYSSEY An Exploration to the North. Hokkaido, Japan

Hokkaido, a huge island located in the north of Japan.
Once this place was called Ezochi, but after the political reform in the late 1800s, its name was changed to Hokkaido. This year marks the 150th year after its name was changed from Ezochi to Hokkaido. I went on a journey along the old roads 150 years back, tracing the historical footprints of the indigenous peoples and the pioneers. Taking this journey through the four seasons, the things I saw were dynamic and filled with variety,
it was an image of the great northern land that is genuinely beautiful.

2018年、私は北海道の名付け親たる松浦武四郎の足跡を追い、ドローンを片手に北海道中を旅して周りました。 “偉人の通った道を辿る”と言えば聞こえは良いものの、いわゆる観光地ばかりを廻った訳ではありません。我々が何気ない日常を過ごす場所に残る足跡。これを空から眺めた時、そこで見た物は、ダイナミックで変化に富み、心から美しいと思える北海道の姿でした。
