利尻山、日本海上の独立峰

日本最北端の都市、稚内市の西方30kmに位置する利尻島。利尻山はその中央に位置する標高1718ｍの独立峰。古来から航海の安全や豊漁を祈る信仰の対象となっていて、山頂には大きな祠が今現在も祀られている。

Mount Rishiri, an independent peak on the Sea of Japan

Rishiri Island is located 30 km west of Wakkanai City, Japan’s northernmost city. Mount Rishiri is an independent peak at 1718 m above sea level, located in the centre of the island. Since ancient times, it has been an object of worship to pray for safe voyages and good catches of fish, and a large shrine is still enshrined on the summit.
