北海道の象徴、キタキツネ

キタキツネは、アイヌ語で「チロンヌプ」と呼ばれる。語源を「われわれが(チ)どっさり殺す(ロンヌ)もの(プ)」という意味に持ち、北海道では古来から一般的な狩猟対象として見られていた事が窺える。もちろん現在においても、北海道で見ない日はないという程に多く、広い地域へ生息している。

アイヌの物語において、チロンヌプは数多くの神謡（カムイユカラ）へ登場する。ただ、その多くは悪戯気の強い存在として語られていて、その存在はヨーロッパの物語に見る妖精にも近い印象を受ける。キタキツネが持つ旺盛な好奇心、時折見せる人懐っこい表情といった性質が、そう語らせてきたのかもしれない。

The fox is called ‘chironnupu’ in the Ainu language. The word is derived from the meaning “we kill a lot (chi)”, which suggests that the fox has been a common target for hunting in Hokkaido since ancient times. Even today, of course, they are so numerous and widespread in Hokkaido that not a day goes by when you don’t see one.

In Ainu stories, the chilonnup appears in many kamuiyukara. However, most of them are described as mischievous and their presence is similar to that of fairies in European tales. The fox’s vigorous curiosity and occasional friendly expressions may have led people to speak of it in this way.
