Lake Akan to freeze over

Lake Akan is a caldera lake located 75 km north of downtown Kushiro, Hokkaido, at an elevation of 400 meters. The surrounding area is a hot spring resort, and the entire area is included in Akan-Mashu National Park, making it one of the most popular tourist destinations in eastern Hokkaido. In winter, the entire surface of the lake freezes over and becomes an icy lake. The lake is also known for its natural phenomena such as frosted flowers, ice bubbles, and the “Mikami Migatari” (crossing of the gods), which can be observed due to its multiple topographical conditions. The “marimo,” a special natural treasure that lives in the area, is also famous.
